Section 2 - Aftermath

Operation Storm Dragon
Rural Bhutan / Aceh, Indonesia

Leader: Kwasniewski
Operator: Mills
Transport: Andreson, (Redacted)
Operatives: Fischer, Nielsen, Oliver, Townsley

Primary Objective: Kill Bhatt

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Objective: Surveil the Swords of Naciketas-affiliated armed resistance fighters in Aceh, Indonesia

Secondary Objective Status: Completed

Summary: The isolated Kingdom of Bhutan is a mountainous land that has only recently begun to extend contact to the outside world. The extremely popular monarch has voluntarily begun the process of conversion to a Constitutional Monarchy and has begun modernizing reforms.

A Talent known only as Bhatt manifested about five years ago. He takes the form of a creature from ancient pre-Buddhist Bhutanese mythology and is suspected of having traveled to Assam at least once prior to Yama’s Apocalypse. The Directorates of Surveillance and Intelligence have pieced together an upsurge in Swords of Naciketas activity coinciding with a sudden flurry of activity from Bhatt. Operations Team was sent to assassinate Bhatt before he could consolidate a mythologically-based hold over the population of rural Bhutan in preparation for a political takeover of a country that would be a perfect replacement for Assam.

Operations Team was given minimal briefing information in an attempt to stymie the precognitive abilities of Jawarhalal Gupta, leader of the Swords of Naciketas. They were infiltrated into Bhutan. They scouted Bhatt’s elaborate temple-palace compound, evading his summoned demon minions, and infiltrated the assault Operatives to complete the operation.

Subsequently, Operations Team was briefed by (Redacted) and sent to the island of Aceh in Indonesia where an armed resistance movement had recently entered into an agreement with the democratically-elected central government to lay down their arms in exchange for the right to directly elect local officials. Section 2 had reason to believe this was a ruse as there was some evidence that the group was sponsored by the Swords of Naciketas. Operations Team spent three days in Aceh scouting the compound and the local citizenry obtaining evidence of ongoing terrorist activity and connections to the Swords.

Operation Himalaya II
Kathmandu, Nepal / New Delhi, India

Leader: Pyatt
Operator: Mitchell
Transport: Keffer, (Redacted), Andreson
Operatives: Aamir, Dasgupta, Lincoln, Redinger, Sawyer

Primary Objective: Capture or kill Gaurav Sharma

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Objective: Prevent the assassination of the Indian Prime Minister

Secondary Objective Status: Completed

Summary: Team was assembled and given minimal briefing. Director Ming claimed that even she had not been briefed as to the target or the reason for the mission and that they would be briefed on the ground when they arrived. This was presumably in order to potentially interfere with the abilities of a potent precognitive Talent.

Operative Keffer transported the team to a small Aleutian island where an unnamed transport operative from Oversight took over. Operation team arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal where they encountered a Nepali who did not register as a Talent. This individual briefed them. Gaurav Sharma, the premiere Buddhist monk and close advisor to the Nepali government since the days of the abolished monarchy, was discovered to be one of the Swords of Naciketas. He had been keeping the Nepali government from consolidating around any of the major factions, presumably to pave the way for Nepal to become the next theocratic Kingdom under the sway of Yama’s worshipers. The last-minute briefing was due to the fear that the leader of the Swords, Jawarhalal Gupta, a potent precognitive Talent, might warn Sharma before the Operation. The Team had slightly more than half an hour before Sharma returned to his office in the monastery from his visit to the presidential palace where the current government was headquartered. Sharma was known to be an incredibly potent Talent of significant versatility.

Operation Team rapidly scouted the monastery utilizing Dasgupta and Redinger while the rest made their way into position utilizing Sawyer to minimize civilian interest. The trap was sprung in Sharma’s office. Despite being only a single Talent, Sharma put up significant resistance before finally being overwhelmed and killed. Operation team extracted once more as the Nepali authorities swarmed.

Operation Team was taken to the Aleutian island where they awaited further instruction. The Directorate of Surveillance monitored a number of suspected Swords of Naciketas cells and noted that Naxalite Maoist rebels in eastern India, on the borders of the Hive, were suddenly moving. The target was determined to be the Prime Minister of India. Operations Team was transported to New Delhi where they coordinated with Indian Defense Force Talents. Team was advised that there was a distinct possibility of infiltration in the Prime Minister’s defense force. Operations Team cleared those Talents guarding the Prime Minister directly. Portals opened and nearly two hundred fighters assaulted the building, most of them non-Talents. In the chaos, the Prime Minister’s non-Talent secretary poisoned him. Quick action by Operative Lincoln saved the Prime Minister’s life. The secretary revealed herself to be loyal to Lord Yama and Operative Lincoln shot her.

The Talents, Indian and Operation Team, repelled the remaining attackers, whereupon Operative Andreson returned them to the facility.

Operation United Multitude
Mathare Slum, Kenya

Leader: Lincoln
Operator: Mitchell
Transport: Sandoval
Operatives: Aamir, Nielsen, Oliver, Redinger, Townsley

Primary Objective: Capture Mungiki Talent-stealing Talent

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Actions: Captured head of Mathare Mungiki and one other Mungiki Talent

Summary: Nairobi’s Mathare slum is one of the most miserable places on the planet. Nearly a million people are packed into a few square miles. Mathare is dominated by the Mungiki, a religio-criminal organization comprised of members of the Kikuyu tribe. Tribal cultural beliefs result in a phenomenon well-known since WW2 of Talents “jumping bodies,” leaving one individual and entering into another. This is theorized to be possible because the culture sees Talents as powers granted by spirits, and because the participants all believe such transfer is possible, they effectively make it happen.

Mathare’s misery is a Talent-generating factory. The Mungiki capture newly manifested Talents and have a Talent capable of forcibly removing the Talent from the individual and placing it into a loyal Mungiki gangster. These loyalists are then hired out as mercenaries to any number of clandestine Talent groups. Operative Team was tasked to scout Mathare, locate the Mungiki Talent capable of Talent theft and transfer, and capture him. His death was deemed an acceptable alternative.

Operations Team secured a base of operations in Nairobi whereupon they came under an attack in the form of poisoned food-delivery. Subsequent investigation prompted contact from a Nairobi Talent of unknown power who indicated he was affiliated with the Kenyan government, and was of the Luhya tribe. He expressed a certain rivalry with the Mungiki leader, and exhibited a strong disinclination to permit foreign Talent teams to operate in his city. Team negotiated permission to remain contingent on focusing their operation on Mathare. Unknown Luhya Talent provided intel about the methodology of Mungiki Talent transfer.

Operative Townsley maintained active monitoring of all Talent activity in the Mathare slum, selecting a vulnerable Talent for capture. Interrogation of this captive resulted in a journey into the slum to meet with Maona, the Mungiki leader, and a Talent of unknown power or capability. Team entered into business negotiations, ostensibly to hire the Mungiki to perform a Talent transfer. It became clear that Maona and his people would not permit “clients” to observe the process or meet the warlock Wamwara, the one who would perform the ritual. Team returned to their base.

Operative Townsley engaged in winnowing logic and through observation narrowed the potential pool of Mathare Talents who might be Wamware to four individuals. Operatives Aamir, Redinger, and Oliver entered Mathare by stealth for visual confirmation of these four individuals. Combat ensued resulting in the capture of Wamwara, Maona, and a third unknown Mungiki Talent. Team extracted rapidly after having been contacted by the mysterious Luhya Talent in Nairobi offering to “buy” Maona.

Operation Clay Jar
Lannister, Iowa

Leader: Sawyer
Operator: Mills
Transport: Keffer
Operatives: Dasgupta, Fischer, Kwasniewski, Summers

Primary Objective: Capture Torches of Gideon cell or cells planning the assassination of US Senator Richard Riker, (R) IA

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Objective: Prevent the assassination of US Senator Richard Riker

Secondary Objective Status: Completed

Summary: Two weeks prior to the mission, Iowa Republican Senator Richard Riker crossed the isle to vote alongside three other Republicans in support of Democratic legislation supported by the Obama White House securing the Constitutional authority of the Federal Government over the States. In response, he got the usual spate of threats of violent death from various right-wing extremist organizations. This is not ordinarily within Section 2’s jurisdiction, but surveillance “noise” from active agents inside the Torches of Gideon Talent terrorist group indicated that one or more cells would be making an attempt on the life of Senator Riker during his stop in Lannister, Iowa during a whistle-stop tour of Iowa seeking to defend his position on Constitutional grounds ahead of the 2010 mid-term elections.

Operations team met with the Senator’s security detail under FBI cover four days in advance of the Lannister stop and then flew ahead to scout the town. Operative Dasgupta and Operative Kwasniewski discovered both the locations of one cell, and the mechanism whereby they received information. A local “independent” church would podcast their sermons online, which contained code alerting Torches of Gideon cells about the Senator’s itinerary. The Operations team apprehended the three individual members of the cell individually, securing two and killing one. The team also secured the non-Talent pastor of the independent Church, Simon Philips. Further monitoring of the church prior to the Senator’s arrival revealed a second cell, which became spooked by the absence of the Pastor and the residual effects on the pastor’s wife left by Team Leader Sawyer and sought to flee Lannister. Operations team set an ambush that successfully secured the three members of the second cell.

Operations team then monitored the Senator’s stop, ensuring no additional cells were present.

Intel Op Second Coming
Leavenworth Prison, Kansas

Leader: Redinger
DoI Intelligence Analyst: Lena Pelton
Transport: Keffer
Operatives: Dasgupta, Fischer, Nielsen, Oliver, Summers

Primary Objective: Infiltrate Leavenworth Prison and evaluate Mad Talent Private John McGrath for mental tampering

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Summary: In the aftermath of Dr. Albright’s “temporary re-assignment” Intelligence Analyst Lena Pelton requisitioned a team of Operatives to investigate Dr. Albright’s ongoing projects for unsanctioned experiments. Private John McGrath, a Mad Talent who believes himself to be Jesus Christ, has been incarcerated in the military prison of Leavenworth for the past 65 years, unaging, “suffering for the sins of man.” Albright has been a regular visitor, monitoring the state of this Mad Talent for scientific and national defense purposes. Intel Op Team was tasked to evaluate Mcgrath, as well as his fellow inmates, guards, and prison staff, for signs that his psychology has been altered in ways outside of Albright’s official reports.

The team first tracked down a recently released inmate where they discovered that many, if not all, those exposed to McGrath for a lengthy period of time come to believe, on some level, that he is who he says he is. Leavenworth is a model prison with well-behaved inmates and a nearly 0% recidivism rate. Inmates emerge as model, if perhaps overly religious, citizens. Team infiltrated Leavenworth under the cover of a military budget office audit with attached EPA environmental impact review. Everyone from the office staff to the guards to the other inmates universally agreed that if McGrath were not Jesus himself, he was the next best thing. The prison food budget was amply expanded by regular exercises of divine power, inmates who were injured or sick became healed, a few inmates over the past few decades had even been resurrected from the dead.

Operative Dasgupta interviewed McGrath himself where he learned that McGrath is merely waiting for the secular authorities to judge him and execute him so he could die for the sins of mankind. He seemed to expect that he would rise in three days and ascend to the side of his “Father” to, in turn, sit in judgment over Mankind. Until then, however, he waits. McGrath viewed Albright as the “Wandering Jew,” cursed by God, and therefore beyond his power. All of this was within the scope of Albright’s official reports.

One of the Talent prison guards was discovered by the Operatives to be a foreign agent, likely of the Vatican. There was some suspicion that the prison Warden, Major Hugo Velasquez, might be complicit in this ongoing espionage. Follow-up was relegated to future Operations.

Intel Op Gherkin
Garyville, Louisiana

Leader: Sawyer
DoI Intelligence Analyst: Lena Pelton
Transport: Keffer
Operatives: Aamir, Kwasniewski, Lincoln, Pyatt, Townsley

Primary Objective: Contact and assess Reverend “Benjamin Johnson”

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Summary: Intelligence analyst Lena Pelton drew conclusions from disparate facts leading her to believe there was a problem at the highest levels of the Directorate of Operations. The growing conflict over Operative Pyatt and his copies had not been adequately dealt with by Dr. Albright and it was causing active problems within the organization. She gathered those Operatives most involved into a private session where she facilitated the resolution of outstanding misunderstandings and in the process revealed the existence of a hidden agenda by Dr. Albright. Evidence provided by Operative Kwasniewski shed greater light on this agenda. Albright was seeking to create a “Mad” Talent from Operative Angela Oliver’s “Samael” alter-ego with the aim of creating a “controllable” Mad Talent as a secret weapon. The creation or manipulation of Mad Talents is expressly against Section 2 policy as mandated by Oversight.

Pelton and Pyatt met with a member of Oversight where they reported Albright resulting in Oversight “temporarily reassigning” him. Pelton subsequently brought together those Operative privy to this classified knowledge on a mission to check up on of Albright’s loose ends, a former Louisiana preacher named Louis Lamonica who had, four years before, been taken into Section 2’s custody as a minor Mad Talent. This preacher was “adjusted” by Albright and set loose on Assam as “Reverend Carpenter” triggering Yama’s apocalypse. Apparently psychological triggers convinced Carpenter that, having subdued the Devil Yama, his calling was concluded for the moment and he was supposed to live a relatively power-less life in rural Louisiana under the name “Benjamin Johnson” to await the second coming when he would be needed once more. Pelton’s Intel Op was to assess whether Albright’s conditioning on Reverend Johnson was indeed functioning as advertised or whether there was any evidence of additional private tampering.

Operatives arrived in Garyville where they discovered an Odal Rune operative acting as the town’s deputy mayor. He was apparently there for the express purpose of keeping an eye on Johnson and not violating the status quo. Conversation with the deputy mayor revealed that a Swords of Naciketas operative had been sniffing around, but had been eliminated by the Odal Rune. Subsequent direct conversation with Reverend Johnson revealed significant insights into his religious worldview and implied some conditions under which me might “go forth once more and lead an army of the righteous.”

Operation Maple Leaf
Lester, Saskatchewan

Leader: Sawyer
Operator: N/A
Transport: Caravaggio / Ivanoff
Operatives: Dasgupta, Lincoln, Nielsen, Oliver, Thompson, Townsley

Primary Objective: Pacify Mad Talent manifestation in Paris suburb.

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Actions: Neutralized Lt. James Hanson of Lester, Saskatchewan, 1 Swords of Naciketas prisoner, 2 refugees-of-interest

Summary: The rural farming community of Lester, Saskatchewan has been under the complete dominion of mad Talent Lt. James Hanson since 1944. He was killed on a bridge south of Paris when he manifested his Talent. That bridge, and his hometown, became intrinsically linked and only the actions of TOG 124 severed that link. Three days previous to the mission, that link reappeared, now encompassing a modern French highway. Hundreds of French rush-hour commuters disappeared. This action, coinciding with circumstantial evidence that there was a concerted attempt to antagonize or stir “mad Talents” worldwide, necessitated a mission to France and through the portal into Lester, there to confront the mad Talent and/or neutralize any theoretical opposing teams to restore matters to status quo.

A significant advantage was the presence of Grade 1 Operative Christian Thompson who was the Sergeant of TOG 124 back in 1944 and who had previous knowledge of the mad Talent and his paradigm. Operation Team transported to France and entered the still-open link to Lt. Hanson’s alternate-reality version of Lester Saskatchewan.

Team encountered a rural 1944-era Canadian farming town where every day was Sunday, and the inhabitants lived a soul-less monotonous existence, long driven insane by their interminable unchanging, unaging lives. Looming over the town was the Eiffel Tower, beyond which was a reasonable facsimile of a Parisian street, complete with cafes, flats, and French citizens, all of whom were clearly play-acting at their normal lives under threat of omnipresent harm or death. Team was immediately detected by three other Talents who provoked the Team into hostile use of Talent power which drew the ire of the omniscient Lt. Hanson. Team was able to extricate themselves via negotiation with Hanson’s proxy, the 14-year-old William Hanson, who seemed immune or impervious to the soul-deadening affliction of his fellow inhabitants.

Subsequent investigation revealed another Talent, apparently Consular attache to the American Embassy in Paris, who was haplessly caught up in the rush-hour abduction. He provided significant intelligence on how Lt. Hanson pacified his new French citizens.

Eventually Team engaged in a debate with opposing team, seeking to utilize rhetoric and persuasive oratory to sway the mad Talent. In the course of this social contest, opposing team was revealed to be Swords of Naciketas seeking to make Lt. Hanson’s “utopia” a mirror image of Lord Yama’s vision of the world. Team utilized a combination of Christian religious sentiment coupled with what fragments of memory and humanity remained in Lt. Hanson’s ex-wife to draw the mad Talent into direct manifestation. The opposing team’s dedication to a “pagan” god was one of the deciding factors that ended the confrontation and sparked brief physical confrontation with enemy team which was rapidly put down. Operation Team convinced Lt. Hanson to allow himself to die whereupon Operative Oliver’s “Samael” manifestation provided final execution.

Operation Startup
San Jose, CA

Leader: Pyatt
DoI Intelligence Analyst: Lena Pelton
Transport: Keffer
Operatives: Aamir, Fischer, Kwasniewski, Redinger, Summers

Primary Objective: Establish contact with presumed Mad Talent “Spirit of Silicon Valley”

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Actions: 1 Swords of Naciketas prisoner

The Directorate of Intelligence had reasonable suspicion that a low-grade “mad Talent” manifested in Silicon Valley in the aftermath of the devastation of Yama’s Apocalypse. Hitherto, this entity had remained a low priority for Section 2. Circumstantial evidence suggested that enemy operatives may be attempting to antagonize this entity to cause harm to the United States and its rebuilding efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area. Due to the highly classified and somewhat limited nature of the intelligence available, and due to the Mad Talent’s presumed ability to manipulate electronic devices, the typical operational method of having a remote operator was deemed unworkable. Directorate of Intelligence Analyst Lena Pelton was strategic leader of the operation with Operative Steven Pyatt as tactical and operational leader.

San Jose has been recovering slowly, partly due to the odd manifestations of the target Mad Talent, who appears to have a disembodied and near omnipotent awareness of the valley and control of electronic devices, particularly broken or destroyed electronics. He appears to inhabit or manipulate those networks and systems obliterated by the EMP pulse of San Francisco’s destruction three years ago. Team almost immediately encountered unusual animal behavior that was determined to stem from a rival Talent group. This led to a showdown with a Swords of Naciketas cell that was also in Silicon Valley seeking to subvert the Mad Talent. A combination of military and social preparedness coupled by Operative Kwasniewski’s knowledge of “gamer” culture resulted in persuading the Mad Talent to side with Section 2’s team and expel the interlopers.

Operation Hornet's Nest
The Hive (Bangladesh)

Leader: Sawyer
Operator: Mills
Transport: Keffer
Operatives: Aamir, Dasgupta, Fischer, Redinger, Townsley

Primary Objective: Rescue UNTDI team captured by the Queen.

Primary Objective Status: Completed (3/5)

Secondary Actions: Captured Drone-Soldier Christopher Larson, 2 other Bangladeshi Talent drones.

Summary: Under pressure from the UN security council, the United Nations Talent Defense Initiative sent a team of 5 to the Hive to engage the Queen in negotiations to ascertain her intentions toward her neighbors. The team did not return. The team sent included one American Talent on loan from Section 2, Raoul Destino, whose past expertise with a Hive outbreak in Georgia was deemed essential to the mission. Section 2 put together a team to infiltrate Bangladesh and recover as many members of the captured UNTDI team as possible, with special priority on Destino. Secondary objective was to capture if possible former Section 2 operative Christopher Larson who is one of the Queen’s most powerful Talent soldier-drones. Team was infiltrated into Bangladesh near the last known coordinates sent by Destino’s Section 2 communications gear. Team encountered and successfully subdued and extracted Chinese Talent Li Fan Gao, the UNTDI transport operative. A day later, in the face of increased Hive watchfulness, they managed to exfiltrate Raoul Destino, and in the process capture Chrisopher Larson and their other captives. This caused the direct attention of the Queen herself, however, and the team opted to evacuate, but not before encountering Rwandan Talent Mtolo, who had avoided capture and became a source of valuable intel for later UN or possibly Section 2 missions. UNTDI Talents Dmitri Yanukovich and Lars Hansen were unfortunately out of reach of this mission.

Operation Bloodhound
Panang, Malaysia / Ayutthaya, Thailand

Leader: Lincoln
Operator: Mills
Transport: Caravaggio
Operatives: Kwasniewski, Nielsen, Oliver, Pyatt, Summers

Primary Objectives: Infiltrate Dam Wan-Sow (Black Saturday), Capture, Destroy and Disrupt Talent leaders and operations.

Primary Objective Status: Completed

Secondary Actions: Captured leader, logistical officer, and bodyguard. $22,000,000 in US Currency

Summary: Dam Wan-Sow (Black Saturday) was a human-trafficking network operating out of the port city of Ayutthaya, Thailand. They specialized in the trafficking of Talent children and other vulnerable Talents to buyers from a variety of dangerous Talent groups who might otherwise have difficulty recruiting. Operation Team took on the guise of mercenaries from “Ursa Major” interested in selling two Talent children, Operatives Oliver and Summers, to Black Saturday in exchange for operating capital. The purchase took place on a hotel rooftop in Panang Malaysia. Operatives Oliver and Summers were transported by their captors to their base in Ayutthaya. Operative Kwasniewski was able to track and triangulate their position, whereupon the remaining Operatives assaulted that location with the purpose of destroying or capturing the six Talents in charge and dismantling their trafficking network. Initial success was followed up by systematic neutralization of Black Saturday’s infrastructure and intimidation tactics against those Thai officials and agencies complicit in the human trafficking trade.

Captives:
Akkarat – Leader, spokesman, hyper-aware of his surroundings
Alak – Former male prostitute from Thailand turned bodyguard
Chaiyo – Hypercognition, the human receptacle of Black Saturday’s operational information
